The Tarantulas

While digging though old pictures in the computer, JD and I found these that were taken last fall sometime. For those of you who don't know JD loves his spiders and bugs. It all started with these little guys, tail less whip scorpions, they are COMPLETELY HARMLESS. They even ate these guys on fear factor, no thanks!
Jason is holding this little female that JD named Twigless.

Here is Jason and the kids investigating Ms. Twigless. They are really fragile so I was a little worried for her while this was going on, but Madison loves them just as much as JD does.

This is JD holding his very first tarantula spiderling. This is Putch (JD names all of our spiders so they have some strange names). He will grow up to be big and black and eat crickets JD says.

Here is Madison checking out Putch.

I know most people are a little freaked out by spiders and Tarantulas, so was I up until last year. But I am glad I was able to overcome my fears because this is something the whole family enjoys and can participate in. When it's time to take care of the tarantulas, the whole family is in there most of the time, and we do it together, which is nice. JD has been able to take in molts from the tarantulas to his school so all the kids can investigate them. Jason has also taken in live tarantulas for JD's show and tell. The kids love it and hopefully we can help kids with the fears of them so they don't go through life standing on a chair screaming for someone to come kill the spider that's crawling across the floor, like I used to do.

Just for info all the tarantulas are harmless. It's no worse than a bee sting if someone does get bitten but we do not make habit out of holding them. This is the only time JD has ever held one. Jason and I were more scared for the little spider than for JD.....LOL.
